Why is there a West Coast Martial arts?
Almost 20 years ago, my wife and I wanted our son to grow up with all the great skills and benefits from learning martial arts. The challenge was that the academies in those days, were more tailored to adults than children. There was an authoritarian approach to these classes, rather than centred around influencing the individual. Our son, Sam, was shy, and we understood that his first martial arts experience had to be right for him, so that he may gain the same love that we had for training in martial arts. So we took the step of opening our own classes for our son, with just a few nieces and nephews along on the first day. Then a short while later, their friends came along too. Then the parents joined in, and all of a sudden we found ourselves running a martial arts academy. Sam went on to win medals in kickboxing internationally by the time he was 8 years old
Lee Douglas
I’ve been training martial arts for over 40 years and coaching for the past 30. Completing my apprenticeship in a Budokan ‘Japanese Martial Arts School’, I’ve found my path with Krav Maga and Kickboxing. Having won a world title with the World Kickboxing Association and graduated as an Expert in Krav Maga. I love to compete and challenge myself, having won competitions in Kickboxing, Karate, Sport Ju Jitsu, Kick Jitsu, Nippon Kempo and Judo.
My experience extends to having completed scenario based training for self-defence.
I’m a believer in continual professional development, gaining qualifications then applying this knowledge to how myself and the students perform. My qualifications inlcude:

- Self Defence
- Conflict Management
- The Legal use of force for Self Defence
- Boxing
- Judo
- Japanese Ju Jitsu
- Scenario based training for self defence
Currently, a member of British Martial Arts & Boxing Association, ensuring that all of our DBS, Insurance and Safe Guarding Checks are current and up to date.
