Why So Many Children Shut Down (And What Parents Can Do About It)

A martial arts coach's perspective on confidence, bullying, self-esteem and preparing for high school

By Lee Douglas · West Coast Martial Arts, Preston · 6 min read

Last week I watched an 11-year-old girl stand perfectly still for nearly two minutes.

Head down. Arms folded. Not talking. Not moving.

The interesting thing was, we weren't surprised. We have a good relationship with her parents and we'd prepared for it. We knew this was how she sometimes responded when she felt overwhelmed.

If you're a parent, you've probably seen something similar.

A difficult piece of homework. A disagreement with a friend. A setback at school. A challenge that feels too big.

The shutters come down. The conversation stops. And the child who was happily chatting five minutes ago suddenly says: "I don't know."

The more children I coach, the more I think this is one of the biggest challenges facing young people today. Not confidence. Overwhelm.

Children Don't Need More Confidence

That might sound strange coming from somebody who teaches martial arts. When parents bring their children to our kids martial arts classes in Preston, confidence is usually one of the first things they mention. Alongside:

  • Self-esteem
  • Focus and discipline
  • Concerns about bullying
  • Resilience
  • Preparation for high school

The funny thing is, I don't think confidence is the starting point. I think it's the result.

Psychologist Albert Bandura called this self-efficacy. In simple terms: people become confident when they collect enough evidence that they can handle difficult things.

"Confidence comes from evidence. Not encouragement alone."

— Albert Bandura, Psychologist

The Biggest Lie Children Tell Themselves

One sentence comes up in class more than any other. "I can't do it."

Sometimes I'll add one word. "Yet."

The funny thing is, you can often see from their face they don't believe you. Not even slightly. And if I'm honest, I understand.

Some children will keep going. Some will quit. Some will surprise themselves. This is where parents make a huge difference — not by rescuing, not by pushing, but by helping children interpret struggle correctly.

Psychologist Carol Dweck's research on growth mindset found that children who believe abilities can improve tend to persist longer when things get difficult. That's exactly what we see on the mats.

The Problem Isn't The Problem

Over the years I've noticed something. When people face a problem, they tend to fall into one of two camps. The first group gets curious. The second group gets overwhelmed.

We once had a team member who previously worked night shifts at an emergency veterinary practice. She'd dealt with trauma, chaos and split-second decisions. When she made a mistake learning one of our systems, she'd pull out her notes, check the process, work out what she'd missed and improve next time. No drama. Just problem solving.

I've also worked with people who would hit a problem and immediately freeze. "I don't know." The problem wasn't intelligence. The problem was overwhelm.

Children do exactly the same thing. One of the most valuable skills we can teach them isn't confidence. It's learning how to pause and ask:

"What's the next thing I could do?"

Why Martial Arts Helps

Martial arts isn't magic. It won't solve every problem. But it does give children something many don't get enough of — a safe place to struggle, a safe place to fail, a safe place to recover.

Miss a kick. Forget a technique. Feel embarrassed. Try again. Repeat.

Eventually children realise something important: getting something wrong isn't dangerous. It's normal. And that lesson transfers into school, friendships, exams and life.

Research consistently shows that physical activity helps children regulate emotions, manage stress and improve wellbeing. Add positive coaching, good role models and a supportive peer group, and you have a powerful environment for growth.

Preparing For High School

Many parents come to us because they're worried about the move to high school. And rightly so. For some children, high school is exciting. For others, it feels like being thrown into deep water.

New teachers. New friends. New expectations. More independence.

The good news is that confidence isn't what gets children through high school. Adaptability does. Communication does. Problem-solving does. Resilience does. The ability to recover after a bad day does.

Those skills can be practised.

What We Actually Teach

People often think martial arts is about punches and kicks. Those things matter. But they're not the reason I've spent my life teaching. What interests me is helping children become more capable. Not perfect. More capable.

"The obstacle is the way."

— The Stoics

In other words, the challenge isn't getting in the way of growth. The challenge is the growth. That's something I've seen thousands of times in martial arts. And in life.

What Parents Can Do This Week

1
Add "Yet"

When your child says "I can't do it" — add one word. "Yet." It reframes the moment without dismissing how they feel.

2
Ask Better Questions

Instead of "What went wrong?" — try "What did you learn?" Same situation. Very different lesson.

3
Praise Recovery

Anybody can feel good when things go well. Recovery is the real skill — and it deserves to be noticed.

Final Thoughts

The 11-year-old girl I mentioned at the start of this article eventually lifted her head. One of our team members, Katie, spent some time chatting with her and helping her work through what she was feeling. She rejoined the last five minutes of the lesson. The following class she completed the whole thing.

That might not sound like much. But confidence rarely arrives all at once.

Five minutes became a full lesson. One difficult moment became proof. Proof that she could work through it.

That's why we teach. Not for trophies. Not for black belts. Not even for confidence. We teach because life is going to challenge every child — and when it does, we want them to know:

"I've felt overwhelmed before. I've worked through it before. I can do it again."

Becoming more capable. Not perfect. Progress.
